We as a culture seem to love to be frightened. The production of horror movies is at an all time high. I don’t watch them like I used to watch Dracula and Frankenstein as a youth. They have become a gore fest. The more blood and guts…the better, seems to be the order of the day. We, per capita, spend more money on Halloween than ever before. I sometimes ask myself if we, as a species, are devolving back to our more animalistic roots. YET…We gather in our houses of worship, praying for peace, affirming God’s love, and longing for a salvation that never seems to come.
The scary reality is that we still haven’t learned that we need to change ourselves in order to change our world. No one is coming to our rescue!
The Buddha tells us that we will “become” what we focus on. In our current reality, all too many are focusing on fear, hate, and struggle. Gandhi, reminds us to become the “change” that we are seeking.
The real scary reality is that many are not only sliding into animalism….as in the time of Fascism, they are proudly becoming monsters. Those of us who understand what is happening are committing ourselves to Radical Love and Peaceful Service. For us there is no other way.
So…grab a bag of popcorn, catch a scary movie, enjoy the little monsters as they come to your house for Trick or Treat. Then…Roll up your sleeves, Resist Injustice and Fascism, Love wastefully, and encourage each other as we face the real monsters amongst us.
Happy Halloween,
Your Minister,
Rev.Ron
