Passover and Easter are behind us. They both contain symbols that have had powerful meanings for many generations. The narrative of Passover has many cultural and religious meanings. While Easter has great spiritual significance, it is not without the influence of so-called Pagan religious and cultural traditions embedded into it, to make it more attractive to believers.
As we evolve and grow as a species, we tend to look to science for more and more answers to our existential questions. We have had to admit that many cherished beliefs at their core were “made up” to comfort and control believers. Free Thinking and Critical Thinking are still considered blasphemy by many “religious” people. We Unitarian Universalists have developed a great respect for the non-believers. We strive to encourage everyone to think for themselves. For us, “where the rubber meets the road” is not about “Correct Belief” but about “Correct Behavior.”
I think that it is critically important for an individual to regularly take an inventory of their most cherished beliefs. What do I actually believe? Why do I believe it? What does it motivate me to do? Does my belief benefit the dynamic world order? As difficult as it may be to believe, I still meet people who believe things, but haven’t a clue as to why!
Our world appears to be getting smaller. Many believe that Life occurs to them, not through them. As we struggle with issues of justice, climate change, diversity, and more, we should be more personally responsible and understand that the symbols in our lives do truly influence us, if we believe that or not. As we release symbols that no longer help us grow, let us replace them with symbols that inspire us to live intentionally. The symbol of our Flaming Chalice is a good example of creating symbolism that truly reflects who we are and releases who we are not.
These thoughts will strike some as insignificant. I respectfully disagree. Let me know what you think.
Faithfully yours,
Rev. Ron
