From the Heart
We live in a time of global climate crisis, or climate emergency. The evidence is all around us, and on the news every day.
So what do we do? I believe we start by reframing. Yes, there are problems. And we can turn this around and recall we are in the time of the Great Turning, the transformation of human society from overconsumption and injustice to sanity and justice.
Many current thinkers adopt versions of this Great Turning framework. I find the work of Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone the most compelling on this subject. Their book “Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We’re in without Going Crazy” is compelling and detailed.
As they view it, there are three big picture stories – narratives – in world culture today. The “business as usual” story is the one of insane overconsumption and injustice. We know this is not working. If we follow the “fear and despair” story we recognize the problems but hide in out bunkers and do nothing to address them.
The Great Turning story is the healthiest and strongest framework for our ongoing thought and action – recognizing that the future is uncertain and much we care for may be lost.
I hope and pray many more of us will come to act in the Great Turning framework. May it be so.
